This is one of our all time favourite walks. It’s great for little ones as it’s so varied. There are tree lined paths, river views, stiles, a small plantation of pine trees, benches, beaches, a stream, fields, kissing gates: everything you could ask for on a walk in the Cornish countryside. Plus there’s nature’s bounty, currently in the form of nettles and wild garlic, and later in the year, blackberries and sloes. Both of our children have found their stride on this walk; it’s the first that they’ve walked a considerable distance without being carried. And today was Youngest’s turn for nearly getting the whole way round. Pretty impressive. You can find out more about the walk in this post.
We set off from St Clements with the river on our left and followed the path round the headland, with the promise of nettle soup for tea. Wild garlic grows happily in the dappled shade and damp beside the river as the path divides to Malpas, and there are nettles aplenty in the fields beyond the kissing gate. Back in St Clements you can rest your legs on the bench overlooking the river; the perfect picnic spot. No photos of this today as I was enjoying my coffee and cake too much!
There are often muddy places around this walk. Today we squelched and squerched the whole way round. Youngest loved splashing in all the ‘muddles’ (muddy puddles).
Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall has some tasty looking nettle recipes. Gather them in the spring with gloves and scissors. And I enjoyed reading this account of growing and eating wild garlic.

I hope you might get chance to enjoy this walk and perhaps some nettle soup?
I’ve never had nettle soup but your photo is tempting me! I love the idea of going for a walk and enjoying some of nature’s bounty when you return home #whatevertheweather

Such a gorgeous place to go foraging. It really is beautiful. I’ve always been curious to try nettle soup. You’ve nudged me to definitely try it! It looks and sounds delicious. Nothing beats cooking with the things you find around you. Thank you so much for sharing this with Whatever The Weather xx

I would LOVE to try nettle soup someday – I have heard you can pretty much use nettles like you would spinach, so could use them in omelettes or on pancakes. Definitely a must try – I am just finding it difficult to find good ones I’d be happy to eat in London 🙂 #whatevertheweather

Yes, I see lots by the roadside but we avoid those, also those at dog height!
